Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon 2014Department of Behavioral Health’s Office of Prevention Services and Programs (OPSP) and our partners are pleased to announce the statewide 2014 Governor’s Red Ribbon Campaign kickoff will be held Wednesday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Mablehouse Barnes Amphitheater.

Mablehouse Barnes is an open-air, covered amphitheater located about 20 minutes west of downtown Atlanta.

We encourage you to take part in this fun, colorful kickoff celebration on October 22. It’s free and open to the public, although a majority of those attending will likely be school-aged children.

Red Ribbon Campaign events started in California after DEA Agent Enrique Camarena’s death in the early 1980’s sparked a grassroots campaign to reduce the demand for drugs and encourage healthy, violence-free lifestyles. The events began spreading across the United States in 1985 following a Congressional Proclamation, and Georgia has been participating since 1987.
•Substance abuse prevention providers will be hosting exhibit tables featuring substance abuse prevention-related information and giveaways.
•The third annual art walk, featuring artwork that depicts substance abuse problems submitted by schools, organizations, and individuals, highlights the theme of substance abuse prevention.
•Once again, the Red Ribbon campaign’s mascot Big Red, as well as other popular mascots, will be there to jazz things up and entertain the audience.
